The Fruit of the Spirit: Love

Bible Study Café Devotions – for the week of July 20, 2009

The Fruit of the Spirit

I heard part of a sermon last night on the radio in which the preacher recommended to stay grounded in the Holy Spirit, one should read the “Fruit of the Spirit” each day until you have it memorized: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” --Galatians 5:22-23 NIV Bible

Today, I will focus on “love.” I will tell someone today that I love them—preferably someone I have not told before.

Have a blessed day, because I love you and so does He!

Your Brother in Christ,

Steve Kendall

Interview with Christian author, Larry Buttram

I conducted my first interview of 2009 today after a bit of hiatus for health reasons and to spend more time writing.

You can listen to and/or download my interview with author Larry Buttram

I had a wonderful time speaking with Larry. Mr.Buttram is a master of suspense writing. He has four publications currently in print, and delivers layers of intrigue and mystery that keep his readers on the edge of their seats. His carefully woven tales make him a favorite among readers who seek great mystery writers. Larry's books include Novels: False Witness, Honor Thy Sister, The Third Generation and the forthcoming The Curtain Torn and a book of Short Stories: The Greatest Gift.

You can visit Larry's Web site at: http://www.larrybuttram.com

Repentance

You can listen to this week show at: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/biblestudycafe

On today's show we discussed "Repentance."
We opened with Scripture from Mark 2:17 (King James Version) using BibleGateWay.com:
"When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

We followed that with an opening prayer.

---------------------------------------------
I used Answers.com to find several definitions including: "Remorse or contrition for past conduct or sin."

Bible Guide- Repentance:

The Greek word for repentance (metanoia) denotes a change of mind, which is given external credence by a change of allegiance and of lifestyle in accordance with the new values adopted.

---------------------

A shout out of thanks for my Blogtalk colleague, fellow Christian blogger, Pastor Ann, who asked other show hosts to dedicate a show to the issue of Repentance during the week of April 5.

You can listen to Pastor Ann's show at: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/TKSCM

------------------------------------
Easter v. Resurrection Sunday:
This Sunday, 12 April 2009 Christians observed what is commonly referred to as "Easter," but my Pastor, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton, of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, and others are using the more appropriate term "Resurrection Sunday" as it places the focus on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, and not some commercialized holiday called Easter.

Here's a link to an NPR interview with Pastor A.R. Bernard, one of my favorite radio preachers, that ran a few years ago about the notion of Resurrection Sunday.

--------------------------------------------
I closed the show with a few reminders:
On Wed., 15 April, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, I will interview with Christian author, Larry Buttram, on my other show, Write On, Right On, Write On!: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Write-On-Right-On

and I encourage you to visit the Web site of my home church, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church www.MountMoriahChurch.org and while you're there, listen to the sermons of our Pastor, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton.

Until next week's show, on 16 April 2009 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

3 April '09: Bible Study Resources

I'm baaaaackkkkk! I've been away from doing a weekly, Internet Radio, Bible study show and blog for too long.

My health is a bit better, so there's no excuse for me not to honor the Lord by sharing what I'm studying about the Bible.

At times I didn't think I should do this show as I thought, "Who really wants to listen to this?" Based on the emails I've received and the numerical count of listeners, it became clear to me that people are listening. And if just one person benefits from what I share about my personal Bible study, then that's a blessing.

I hosted my first show of 2009 at 11 a.m., 3 April 2009 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time at: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/BibleStudyCafe

On today's show we discussed the following items:

--The church I attend, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, has a new design: www.MountMoriahChurch.org

--------------------------------------------------------------

--Palm Sunday is this Sunday, 5 April. I read a passage from the International Bible Society's Web site about Palm Sunday: Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem based on Mark 11:1-11

--------------------------------------------------------------

--Pastor David Jeremiah's sermon series on the book of Daniel called, "The Handwriting on the Wall"

You can visit Pastor Jeremiah's archive to listen to the series, which I believe began on Feb. 20: http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Turning_Point/archives.asp?bcd=2/20/2009

--David Jeremiah's main Web site is: http://www.davidjeremiah.org

--------------------------------------------------------------

--A fellow Christian blogger, Pastor Ann has asked other show hosts to dedicate a show to the issue of Repentance during the week of April 5.

You can listen to Pastor Ann's show at: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/TKSCM

--------------------------------------------------------------

--In my personal Bible study I'm reading the Old Testament from start to finish. I'm currently in the Book of Numbers, Chapter 6, which talks about the Nazarites, who made a vow of separation to the Lord.

--The Bible search engine, BibleGateWay.com, I use has a commentary about the Nazarites.

--I've found the commentaries and outlines provided by Thru the Bible with Dr. James Vernon McGee to be quite useful.

--I wanted to close the show with the reading of the King James Version of Numbers 6:22-27, but forgot to do so, but you can read it and consider it my closing remarks to you! : )

--------------------------------------------------------------

Until our next show, on Thursday, 9 April, have a blessed week.

Free Bible Study Resources: Week of Oct. 6, 2008

The following Bible study resources mentioned on this week's BibleStudyCafe Show:

1. I'm proud to announce that the sermons of my pastor, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton, of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Washington, DC, are now available online!

You can listen to Pastor Dalton's most recent sermon, "Finish the Race" from Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008.

2. The Washington Post article, "Plugging the Planet Into the Word." The subtitle of the article, "Christian Groups Use Technology to Greatly Expand Bible's Audience," really speaks to encouraging missionary work discussed in the story. You can also read my summary of the article.

-- Two resources mentioned in the article: The Forum of Bible Agencies International, an organization which has taken on the challenge of translating the Bible into many languages: http://www.ifoba.com and another useful site referenced in the article, to chart the progress of the Good News globally is: http://www.worldmap.org

3. The Ancient Greek Word of the Week: Actually, I'll feature several words mentioned in Pastor Dalton's Oct. 5, 2008 sermon:

1 Corinthians 9:24 (The Greek word for "race" is "Stadion")

1 Corinthians 9:25 (Crown is "Stephanos" in Greek) My name, Steven, comes from this word! : )

4. Each week in this blog, I use BibleGateway.com for Bible verses and the Interlinear Bible offered by Bible.CrossWalk.com

Please let me know of any Bible study resources that you use so that I may post them on this blog.

Your Brother in Christ,

Recommended Bible Study Resources: Sept. 10, 2008

Bible study resources mentioned on this week's BibleStudyCafe show:

1.Institute of Biblical Greek: http://www.biblicalgreek.org

2. Oneplace.com - Audio sermons online:

OnePlace.com is a site which features audio sermons from a wide variety preachers. I go to this site to listen to some of my favorites, including Pastor Paul Sheppard, and Dr. Tony Evans.

This site is useful as I am able to learn about and listen to pastors not heard on the radio in my local area.

OnePlace.com also offers a number of other Bible study resources including devotionals, PodCasts of popular programs, articles and ministry newsletters.

The Ancient Greek Word of the Week is: "Koine"

Koine, as defined and pronounced by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/koine

Daniel B. Wallace has a nice, short history of Koine Greek at: http://www.bible-history.com/quotes/daniel_b_wallace_1.html

On today's show, I read from the resource book, "1,001 Things You Always Wanted to Know About the Bible But Never Thought to Ask" by J. Stephen Lang

Please let me know of any Bible study resources that you use so that I may post them on this blog.

BibleStudyCafe.com Show: Sept. 4 Resources

On this week's edition of the BibleStudyCafe Show, I discussed the following resources:

1. BibleGateway.com, which allows one to research Bible verses in many versions, and conduct all types of Biblical research.

2. Rick Renner Ministries' Sparkling Gems from the Greek: I became interested in learning more about the koine (common) Greek language, with which much of the New Testament was originally written in, thanks to the weekly Bible study led by my Pastor, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton, Senior Pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

Learning the meaning behind the Greek words of the New Testament really provides me with a deeper understanding of the Bible.

I recommend the Web site, Renner.org from Rick Renner Ministries. Renner's site offers a Greek word of the week, which Renner refers to as the Sparkling Gem of the Week. Renner also has a book and CD called Daily Sparkling Gems from the Greek, each of which contain his complete collection of lessons about New Testament Greek.

You can sign up for Rick Renner's mailing lists, including one that delivers a Greek word to your inbox several days a week.

3. The BibleStudyCafe, Ancient Greek word of the week is Gnosis, which means "knowledge"

The definition of Gnosis from bible.crosswalk.com:

1. the general knowledge of Christian religion

2. the deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of this religion

An example can be found in Romans 11:33 from BibleGateway.com: "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!" (New International Version)
